The site of the Hawley structure no longer exists. It’s actually the foundation of the now-gone Hawley Power House, and PGE is now calling it the Dance Floor. The bridge went through a $21 million renovation from 1998–99, which included replacing the steel grated deck and repainting. The original lead based paint was completely removed and replaced with 3 layers of new paint that is estimated to last 30 years. During this upgrade the sidewalks were widened to 10 feet (3.0 m), making it a thoroughfare for bicycle commuters. Due to the replacement of the steel deck during this project, the channels which used to carry the rails for streetcars and interurban trains were also removed. For six or seven years every spring, this was an experience of personal significance to me, a turning point perhaps, as it put me in an industrial environment in close contact with an environment that is still in use, closed, or abandoned, enabling me to document buildings and structures that are often unrecognized and forgotten. These art jams were a lot of fun.
