Learn more about bridges on Bridgestories |
Through my work as a painter of Oregon’s transportation architecture, I have established a niche in the art community as an artist contributing to the visual documentation of urban landmarks. Portland is a city of rivers and bridges. I am fascinated by the way in which the geometric shapes of the bridges’ steel girders frame the landscape of the city, and I admire the subject of bridges and their engineering how little we celebrate the wonderful achievements of engineering and design in our city bridges. The bridges of Portland connect communities, unite the city, and improve commerce. I create paintings of the bridges from unusual points of view, giving them a dramatic perspective, which renders them both realistic and abstract at the same time. I go out and try to see an ordinary part of the city landscape in a new way. Light plays an important role in my paintings, illuminating the structure of the bridges, casting shadows, and encouraging the viewer to see the bridges in that new way.
