Learn more about bridges on Bridgestories

Through my work as a painter of Oregon’s transportation architecture, I have established a niche in the art community as an artist contributing to the visual documentation of urban landmarks.  Portland is a city of rivers and bridges.  I am fascinated by the way in which the geometric shapes of the bridges’ steel girders frame the landscape of the city, and I admire the subject of bridges and their engineering – how little we celebrate the wonderful achievements of engineering and design in our city bridges.  The bridges of Portland connect communities, unite the city, and improve commerce.  I create paintings of the bridges from unusual points of view, giving them a dramatic perspective, which renders them both realistic and abstract at the same time.  I go out and try to see an ordinary part of the city landscape in a new way.  Light plays an important role in my paintings, illuminating the structure of the bridges, casting shadows, and encouraging the viewer to see the bridges in that new way.
